“The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and he delighteth in his way.” Psalm 37:23-24 (KJV)
Let’s look specifically at the word, “steps.” One single word. This word is very important and intentional.
“Steps.” Notice that it is the plural of “step.”
There are many times that we want the solution to a problem or the answer to a prayer to come right away. We live in a world of instant gratification. We all are way too busy to slow down, and sometimes we want things fast and even want things right NOW! Forgive us Lord when we expect the answer to a prayer to come even before we stop praying.
But if we look at the word, “steps,” the word itself reveals that there is a process. The word “steps” is defined as “to advance by moving both feet in succession, one after the other.”
The word implies movement either forward or backward. Movement.
God orders our steps because there is somewhere He wants us to go. He desires us to walk with Him. God has placed or ordered those steps to finally reveal at the end of that path, something He has for us.
The book of Hebrews says it this way, “Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” Hebrews 12:1-2 (NKJV)
The reward or goal? Spending eternity with Jesus Christ.
If all it took was to complete one step to attain the prize that God has for us, why would we need any divine intervention. If what we desired took one simple step, why would we need God?
Matthew Henry, the great commentator, said this, “Observe, God orders the steps of a good man; not only His way in general, by His written word, but by His particular steps, by the whispers of conscience, saying, ‘This is the way, walk in it.’
He does not always show us His way at a distance, but leads us step by step, as children are lead, and so keeps us in a continual dependence upon His guidance.
Did you get it? The steps God orders requires continual dependence upon His guidance.
There may be times where God lays before you a single step to Victory. Like the choice to call upon the Name of the Lord and accepts Jesus as your Savior. The steps in which we need God’s continual guidance to the end will require God’s hand holding our hand; walking with us every step of the way.
Maybe the steps lead to deliverance. Maybe the steps lead to healing. Maybe the steps lead to your marriage being restored. Maybe the steps lead to your children coming back to the Lord.
All I know is, without His hand in ours, we will fail or at the very least get lost. Are you walking in the steps if the Lord?
