PAUL PRESENTS HIS CREDENTIALS

Romans 1:1–7 (nkjv)

1 Paul, a bondservant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated to the gospel of God

which He promised before through His prophets in the Holy Scriptures,

concerning His Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who was born of the seed of David according to the flesh,

and declared to be the Son of God with power according to the Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead.

Through Him we have received grace and apostleship for obedience to the faith among all nations for His name,

among whom you also are the called of Jesus Christ;

To all who are in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

1. He was a SERVANT of Jesus Christ

Romans 1:1a (nkjv) Paul, a bondservant of Jesus Christ…

2. He was an APOSTLE

Romans 1:1b (nkjv) Paul, a bondservant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle

3. He was a PREACHER of the Gospel

Romans 1:1–4 (nkjv)

1 Paul, a bondservant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated to the gospel of God

which He promised before through His prophets in the Holy Scriptures,

concerning His Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who was born of the seed of David according to the flesh,

and declared to be the Son of God with power according to the Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead.

Gospel means the “Good News!”

It is the message that Christ died for our sins, was buried and rose again, and now is able to save all who trust Him.

I Corinthians 15:1-4 (nkjv)

1 Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand, by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you—unless you believed in vain.

For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures…

Paul states it is “the Gospel of God” (Rom. 1:1) because it originates with God; it was not invented by man.

It is “the Gospel of Christ” (Rom. 1:16) because it centers in Christ, the Savior.

Paul also calls it “the Gospel of His Son” (Rom. 1:9), which indicates that Jesus Christ is God!

In Romans 16:25–26, Paul called it “my Gospel.” By this Paul meant the special emphasis he gave in his ministry to the doctrine of the church and the place of the Gentiles in the plan of God.

The GOSPEL is more pronounced in the New Testament and certainly central to the Apostle’s preaching in the letters, However, the Old Testament contains the Gospel as well!

There was Gospel fulfillment in the New Testament. There was Gospel promise in the Old Testament.

The Gospel is not a new message. It was promised in the Old Testament, beginning with the first mention of the Gospel…

Genesis 3:15 (nkjv)

And I will put enmity
Between you and the woman,
And between your seed and her Seed;
He shall bruise your head,
And you shall bruise His heel.

Portraits of Christ’s Person and Work In the Old Testament

TYPOLOGY – a type is a person, event, or thing in the Old Testament that foreshadows something in the New Testament.

Following are some of the main types of Christ in the Old Testament Scriptures.

These portraits of Christ in Old Testament typology help us understand more clearly the person and work of Christ as revealed in the New Testament.

1. The Story of Cain and Abel (Genesis 4:4)

2. The Offering of Isaac (Genesis 22)

3. The Passover Lamb (Exodus 12)

4. The Tabernacle (Exodus 25-30)

5. The Five Levitical Offerings (Leviticus 1-7)

6. The Day of Atonement (Leviticus 16)

7. The Feasts of Israel (Leviticus 23)

Isaiah 1:18 (nkjv)

“Come now, and let us reason together,” Says the Lord, “Though your sins are like scarlet, They shall be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They shall be as wool.”

Jesus Christ is the center of the Gospel message.

Paul identified Jesus as a man, a Jew, and the Son of God. He was born of a virgin into the family of David, which gave Him the right to David’s throne. He died for the sins of the world. Then was raised from the dead..

It is this miraculous event of substitutionary death and the victorious resurrection that constitutes the Gospel. It was this Gospel that Paul preached!

It is said that Biblical Christianity is God reaching down to man; religion is man reaching up to God.

Biblical Christianity is not a religion, it is a relationship with God through His Son, Jesus Christ!

Will you a trust in Christ as your Savior, and follow Him as your Lord?

4. He was a MISSIONARY to the Gentiles

Romans 1:5–7 (nkjv)

Through Him we have received grace and apostleship for obedience to the faith among all nations for His name,

among whom you also are the called of Jesus Christ;

To all who are in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

CLOSING THOUGHT:
